Pool Resurfacing: What Is It and When Is It Needed?

Ahh, pools! Whether you have an elaborately designed in-ground swimming pool with a grand pool deck or a humble above-ground one, swimming pools are such a cool addition to any home. They can be a good place to exercise, play, or relax. Just looking at them already feels nice – except when they’re not. Perhaps, pools are one of the most neglected landscaping features that radiates an air of sadness. If your pool has gotten rundown, for sure, you’ll just avoid it rather than diving into it.

Fortunately, it’s not yet the end of your swimming pool, and all it takes is pool resurfacing. Specifically, pool resurfacing is a must when the plasters have discolored, paints start to peel, and stain rusts are already visible in your pool deck and other pool area. Sometimes, cracks show off, and fiberglass wears off too. All of these are signs that it’s high time to resurface your pool. Generally speaking, pools need resurfacing every ten years, but the sooner you handle any issue, the better would it be. Regardless if you want to resurface your pool for maintenance or aesthetic reasons, getting it done by professional pool builders allows you to enjoy it for many years.

Pool renovations, will not just make your swimming looking good again, but it will also allow you to maximize all of its features. Such services are very helpful too when trying to do pool deck resurfacing, adding LED lighting, installing a premier coat, or if you simply want to add a bee cave in your pool. When doing such works, make sure that you have a professional pool builder with you to help you go through the process as smooth and as fast as possible.

Types of surfacing

When it comes for surfacing, there are three types and you can choose among pebble, quartz, and plaster.

Pool plaster

Pool plastering isn’t exactly rocket science. In fact, this is the most overlooked maintenance solution applied to your private pool. What is good about this is that it improves the pool’s aesthetic appeal and smoothens the pool surface. It is also known for its ability to create a watertight seal between the pool water and the rough underlying surface. This type can last for at least seven years.

Pebbles finish

Pebble finish is a rage since it’s low maintenance but makes a pool unique-looking. This finish is more expensive than plaster, but it has a much longer lifespan. It is also nonporous, which means that it doesn’t absorb pool chemicals, and it resists algae growth and staining. Pebble finish is also good when adding bee cave in the pool. Pebble finish can last for up to 12 years.

Quartz finishes

Quartz is known for being strong, nonporous, and stain-resistant. It has colored ceramic pigments that permanently bonded onto its surfaces for a tough, beautiful exterior. Quartz also lasts longer and works effectively in fighting chemical imbalances that cause erosion, making it a great material during pool deck resurfacing too. This type of finishing can last around 12-15 years.

Using fiberglass can dramatically reduce construction or renovation costs, limit maintenance, and extend a swimming pool’s life. It also provides superior strength and is not susceptible to corrosion. It also offers a smooth pool surface, clean gel coat finish that is non-abrasive, with no sharp edges at all. The surface is smooth and non-porous, so it cleans easily and is very stain resistant, making maintenance very minimal. This helps the pool deck stand out as well.

Pool Remodeling Process

Pool remodeling entails the following:

Drain: Initially, the first phase of your remodeling or resurfacing project is draining the water from the pool. Check out local laws if there is to ensure that you are not going against any of them. Make sure that you don’t damage the pool deck as well to avoid additional cost.

Preparation: The next step is the loudest and dustiest stage since it involves sandblasting, multi-coating, and stripping crews. At this phase, the pool deck is prone to damages, so keep it protected as much as you can.

Tile and Masonry: The third step entails installing pool tiles, coping, and adding other decorative features in the different areas of the pool, including the pool deck, floor, and surfaces. This process can take anywhere from 1 to 3 working days.

Plumbing and Seal: This step involves sealing the plumbing to ensure that the pool is water-tight. The pool shell will be washed here too.

Pool Finish Material Installation: The fourth step is all about installing pool surface finishes, allowing your pool to take shape. This can last for 1-2 days, depending on the materials used.

Acid Wash (If Needed): Acid wash is needed if you have used Pebble, Hydrazzo, Beadcrete, or darker Quartz.

Cleanup and Pool Fill: A general cleanup will take place then the pool will be filled with water. The pool will be filled just halfway.

Initial Water Treatment/Surface Curing: This is the final and most important step to ensure that your pool is good to go.
